چکیده

The use of the human steady-state evoked potential (SSEP) as a possible measure of mental-state estimation is explored. A method for evoking a visual response to a sumof-ten sine waves is presented. This approach provides simultaneous multiple frequency measurements of the human EEG to the evoking stimulus in terms of describing functions (gain and phase) and remnant spectra. Ways in which these quantities vary with the addition of performance %asks (manual tracking, grammatical reasoning, and decision making) are presented. Models of the describing function measures can be formulated using systems engineering technology. Relationships between model parameters and performance scores during manual tracking are discussed. Problems of unresponsiveness and lack of repeatability of subject responses are addressed in terms of a need for loop closure of the SSEP. A technique to achieve loop closure using a lock-in amplifier approach is presented. Results of a study designed to test the effectiveness of using feedback to consciously connect humans to their evoked response are presented. Findings indicate that conscious control of EEG is possible. Implications of these results in terms of secondary tasks for mental-state estimation and brain actuated control are addressed. INTRODUCTION By using appropriate signal averaging techniques, it is possible to detect a response in the human electroencephalograph (EEG) to evoking stimuli. When the stimulus is sinusoidally modulated the result is called a steady state evoked potential (SSEP). Research in this area (Spekreijse, 1966; Regan, 1972; Wilson and O'Donnell, 1980) suggests that the SSEP may be a useful indicator for mentalstate estimation. On the Detection of Steady - State Visually Evoked Potentials

In this paper we develop a new method, based on the periodogram of a time-series, for the detection of steady-state VEPs. The method tests the data for the presence of hidden periodic components, which correspond to steady-state VEPs.

Effects of Mental Load and Fatigue on Steady-State Evoked Potential Based Brain Computer Interface Tasks: A Comparison of Periodic Flickering and Motion-Reversal Based Visual Attention

Steady-state visual evoked potentials (SSVEP) based paradigm is a conventional BCI method with the advantages of high information transfer rate, high tolerance to artifacts and the robust performance across users. But the occurrence of mental load and fatigue when users stare at flickering stimuli is a critical problem in implementation of SSVEP-based BCIs. Based on electroencephalography (EEG)...

Time-frequency analysis of visual evoked potentials using chirplet transform - Electronics Letters

Introduction: Detecting signals of visual evoked potentials (VEPs) elicited by repetitive stimuli is generally difficult, since the signal-tonoise ratio (SNR) of VEPs embedded in strong background noise and spontaneous EEG is rather low [1]. When the complete information of the signal to be detected is known, the optimal detector (in the Neyman-Pearson sense) is the likelihood ratio test which ...

Detecting number processing and mental calculation in patients with disorders of consciousness using a hybrid brain-computer interface system

BACKGROUND For patients with disorders of consciousness such as coma, a vegetative state or a minimally conscious state, one challenge is to detect and assess the residual cognitive functions in their brains. Number processing and mental calculation are important brain functions but are difficult to detect in patients with disorders of consciousness using motor response-based clinical assessmen...

Single-epoch analysis of interleaved evoked potentials and fMRI responses during steady-state visual stimulation.

OBJECTIVE Aim of the study was to record BOLD-fMRI interleaved with evoked potentials for single-epochs of visual stimulation and to investigate the possible relationship between these two measures. METHODS Sparse recording of fMRI and EEG allowed us to measure BOLD responses and evoked potentials on an epoch-by-epoch basis. To obtain robust estimates of evoked potentials, we used blocks of c...
